The crown is button at the side of the watch, usually at the 3 o
'clock position. Its purpose, in the case
of a mechanical watch, is to wind
the watch and to set the hands. In quartz watches the
crown is used to set the hands. On most modern watches
either quartz or mechanical, the crown is also used to
set the date quickly.
Crowns come in a variety of shapes sizes and colors. For
the watchmaker, there are two common colors, white and yellow,
with the occasional pink or rose (pink or rose gold).
Usually white is stainless steel, but it could also be chrome
plated, white gold, or even platinum. Yellow and white
gold crowns are usually gold plated, but in some cases
they are are solid gold.
Crowns come in two basic types, dress type and water-resistant (WR) type. Most crowns are generic, but the more expensive watches often have crowns with the maker's logo embossed on the end of the crown.
With so much variety it is not possible to offer more than broad pricing. Generic dress crowns and WR crowns in gold plate or stainless steel begin at $45.00. Most crowns are under $60.00. However, a platinum crown with the maker's logo could be above $400.00. We are pleased for the opportunity to quote for specific types.
Replacing a crown is considered a partial repair. The warranty on any partial repair extends only to the parts which have been replaced.
