The stem is the part of the watch that extends from the crown
(winding/setting button) into the watch movement. Because a
particular movement may fit into a
number of different
cases, stems come from the factory with sufficient length to fit
virtually any case.
The replacement stem must be cut to the proper length, the end correctly finished, and the crown fitted.
Many times it is not possible to replace just the stem even though that may be the only broken part. If the stem is broken where it is threaded into the crown, it is not possible to extract the broken piece from the crown. In that case the crown must be replaced as well.
A rusty stem is a sure sign that the watch has been wet. If the stem on a water-resistant watch is rusty, very likely the "O" ring gasket in the crown has failed, and the crown should be replaced as well in order to preserve water resistance.
Replacing a stem is considered a partial repair. The warranty on any partial repair extends only to the parts which have been replaced.
Replacing a broken stem is usually $55.00 to $65.00. Sometimes more for specific branded parts.
